Campus Visits - What is the Silver Bullet for Admissions??
What is the Silver Bullet for Admissions??
We at JDM see your pain. Each year you fight, scratch and claw to get enough students to commit for the fall, only to have you sitting on pins and needles Kickoff Weekend hoping that everyone that is supposed to come, really does come!
What is the most important aspect of college recruitment? Despite all the pieces that make up the college selection process, in conversations with clients and in reading I’ve done, the Campus Visit is frequently identified as most important.
Today we lay out a some of the huge about of evidence showing how critical the Campus Visit is and therefore encourage all of us to make campus visits the best they can be – with the payoff being solid improvement in the matriculation rate.
A Look at the Evidence
I think we all agree campus visits help, but just how much?
- From Scott Secore’s article “The Significance of Campus Visitations to College Choice and Strategic Enrollment Management” (Nov 2018): A three-year study of over 23,000 students showed those who attended a campus visit were TWICE as likely to matriculate as those who had not.
- California State University Northridge- 80% of student’s surveyed confirmed that an open house did have a direct contribution to their enrollment at CSUN.
- Some of our NACCAP clients are seeing 90% of those who visit actually enroll.
- Study by StudentPOLL,- 65% of polled students said the campus visit was most important.
- A recent study found campus visitations to be at least 90% effective when they used open house events, overnight stays, and weekend visits as a marketing and recruitment practice.
Plus, there have been other studies that just keep beating this same drum – make sure the campus visit is excellent.
As you consider all the evidence, ask yourself…
- How far out should my enrollment reach go? According to Google – Private Non-Profit 4yr Universities have a median student distance from campus of 94 miles. At the 25th percentile it’s 23 miles and at the 75 percentile it’s 230 miles.
- How can I maximize the number of accepted students that come for a Campus Visit?
- How do we make the Campus Visit exciting enough to get those who live over 3 hours away to come for a weekend?
- For those accepted students too far away, how can I replicate the visit digitally to give them the same ‘wow’ factor of an in-person visit? Be careful. If this option is widely known, many may choose virtual instead of a real life visit. Live is still best!

Impact of Coronas Virus
What impact will the Coronas Virus have on my Promotional needs? And what is 'safe' from the Coronas Virus? Great questions!
- Overseas Factories
- Most are closed until late February
- Likely to be at limited capacity even when they reopen due to restrictions on “sick” people returning to work
- Stateside Suppliers
- Have some additional stock on hand
- Orders to restock will be on hold until factories reopen causing possible “out of stocks” in coming weeks
- T-Shirts
- T-shirt availability is ‘like normal”
- Prices may increase while cotton supply replenishes if Chinese cotton production is impacted
